Motor Skills

Section Overview

The issues associated with motor skill disabilities are quite similar in and outside of Flash. The best methods for designing for these issues are typically very easy to implement.

Common Issues

Some people may suffer from limited mobility or lack of proper motor skills. These people in particular may find it difficult to use the mouse and keyboard with as much ease and precision as anyone else. Sometimes the mouse may better suit this type of person. Other times, using only the keyboard to navigate and operate a site is best.

To be sure that your Flash application is fully accessible to this group of people, it is a good idea to take advantage of Flash’s full support for keyboard input. Make the site fully “tabbable” and make any scrolling functions available through the arrow keys. As mentioned though, the keyboard may not fit the needs of all disabilities so keep mouse functionality intact and simple. Don’t design parts of your site to require abnormal amounts of dexterity to operate.
